Alleppey

Alleppey, also known as Alappuzha, is a town in the Indian state of Kerala, on the Malabar coast of southwest India. It is often called the Venice of the East, a nickname that reflects its network of lagoons and canals running between the houses, fields and markets along the shoreline.

What to expect

The town's best-known experience is a houseboat cruise through the backwaters. These slow journeys drift past paddy fields, coconut groves and village life, and they suit travellers who want to watch the landscape unfold at an easy pace. Many visitors choose to spend a night or more on the water rather than only passing through.

Alleppey is also a major centre of the coir industry, which turns coconut husk fibre into rope, mats and other goods. Visitors interested in traditional crafts and working life will find the trade worth seeing as part of a wider look at the town.

Traditional boat races

The town is known for its traditional boat races, held on the backwater waterways. They draw large crowds and give a sense of the community's long связь with the water. If your trip coincides with a race, it can be a lively highlight.

Planning your visit

  • Allow time for at least one backwater cruise, whether a day trip or an overnight houseboat stay.
  • Visit a coir workshop to see how the fibre is prepared and woven.
  • Check the timing of boat races if you hope to attend one, as they are seasonal events.

Alleppey suits visitors who enjoy slow travel, waterside scenery and a glimpse of everyday work along Kerala's canals.
