Beyond the Pedestal: Sculptures in the Collection, from the 1960s to Today

Beyond the Pedestal: Sculptures in the Collection, from the 1960s to Today is an exhibition at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts that draws on the institution's own holdings to chart the evolution of sculpture over the past six decades.

The exhibition traces a trajectory from Minimalism and Land art — with their emphasis on scale and spatial engagement — through to Conceptual art's privileging of ideas over physical form. A defining feature is the deliberate rejection of the traditional pedestal: works are placed directly on the floor, mounted on walls, or suspended in mid-air, challenging conventional relationships between sculpture, the viewer's body and the surrounding space.

Curated by Iris Amizlev, Curator of Special Projects at the MMFA, the exhibition features works by artists including Ulysse Comtois, alongside others working across sculpture, installation and mixed media from the 1960s to the present day.

The exhibition runs until March 7, 2027.
