利帕里群岛

The Aeolian Islands are a volcanic archipelago off the northeastern coast of Sicily, in Italy. The group is made up of seven islands, among them Stromboli and Vulcano, and the islands are also known as the Lipari Islands after Lipari, the largest of them. Their postal address is Isole Eolie, 98055 Lipari ME, Italy.

The archipelago is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, valued for its outstanding examples of volcanic island-building processes. Each island shows the work of volcanoes in its own way, so a visit is as much a chance to see geology at close range as it is a stay by the sea.

What a visit offers

The landscapes are the main reason people come. Dark lava, steep slopes and open water make up views that change with each island and each hour of the day. Because the islands are spread across the sea, a trip often involves moving between them, and the crossings themselves give a good sense of how the archipelago is arranged.

  • Stromboli is known for its active volcano, which shapes the island and its surroundings.
  • Vulcano is another volcanic island in the group and a natural choice for those interested in the region's geology.
  • Lipari, the largest island and the name behind the alternative title, is the main base for many visitors.

Planning your trip

The archipelago lies off Sicily, so most visitors reach it by way of the island and then travel on by sea between the islands. Whatever the season, it is worth checking the current arrangements for crossings and accommodation before setting out, since these can vary. The Aeolian Islands suit travellers who want volcanic scenery, quiet islands and the pleasure of island-hopping across a small, distinctive corner of the Mediterranean.
