圣吉耶姆勒代塞尔

Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert is a medieval village set in a rugged gorge of the Hérault valley, in the Occitania region of southern France, within reach of Montpellier. It is a place that rewards a slow visit: a small cluster of old stone houses, quiet lanes and a leafy square, all framed by the dramatic cliffs of the surrounding landscape.

What to see

  • The abbey: The village grew up around its 11th-century abbey, the heart of the place and the reason many travellers stop here.
  • The stone lanes: Wandering the narrow streets on foot is the simplest way to take in the village's medieval character.
  • The leafy square: A shaded spot for pausing between visits.

Around the village

The village is listed by UNESCO as part of the Camino de Santiago, the pilgrimage route, so you will often see walkers passing through. Beyond the streets, the surrounding gorge invites a walk. Nearby, you can seek out the Pont du Diable, a bridge in the valley, and the steep cliffs of Gellone, which give the area its rugged feel.

Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert suits a half-day or full-day outing from Montpellier, especially for those who enjoy history, quiet villages and walking in open countryside. Wear comfortable shoes, as the lanes are stony and the paths outside the village can be uneven. Check current opening arrangements for the abbey before you travel, as these are not covered here.
