Asakusa is a traditional neighborhood in Tokyo, in the Kanto Region of Japan, and it is one of the city's most recognisable areas for visitors who want to see older Tokyo rather than its modern skyline. The district centres on Senso-ji Temple, and much of the atmosphere of a visit comes from how the temple and its surroundings sit together.

The temple and its setting

Senso-ji is the focus of Asakusa, and the neighbourhood around it keeps a traditional character. Cherry blossoms in season frame the historic temple, which gives the area a particular appeal during the sakura period. Even outside the blossom season, walking the streets that lead to the temple gives a sense of the cultural heritage that defines the district.

What a visit offers

  • Heritage sightseeing: Senso-ji and the streets around it are the main reason people come, and they make a good first stop for anyone interested in Japanese temple architecture and daily neighbourhood life.
  • Cherry blossom viewing: The sakura season frames the temple and draws many visitors, so it is worth planning around if you want to see the area at its most striking.
  • Old Tokyo atmosphere: Asakusa offers a contrast with the newer parts of the city, and it suits a slower pace of exploration on foot.

Planning your trip

Asakusa works well as a half-day or full-day outing, and it can be combined with other parts of Tokyo in the same trip. Because the neighbourhood is a popular destination, expect crowds at the temple, especially in cherry blossom season, and allow extra time to move through the busier streets. Going at a quieter time of day can make the area feel more relaxed.
