Allier is a department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of central France. It takes its name from the Allier River, which runs through the landscape and shapes much of what a visitor sees here. The department is quieter than many French destinations, and that is part of its appeal for travellers who prefer slower days.

What to expect

The countryside is a mix of farmland, woodland and river valleys, with towns scattered across it. Walking, cycling and simply driving between villages are natural ways to take in the scenery. Visitors who enjoy historic towns will find a number of them here, each with its own character and pace.

Allier is especially known for its thermal spas. The best-known is Vichy, a spa town whose waters have drawn visitors for a long time. Vichy also has a notable place in twentieth-century history: during the Second World War it briefly served as the seat of the French government. A visit there combines the spa atmosphere with that historical background.

Planning a visit

  • Vichy is the main draw for spa visitors and those interested in its wartime history.
  • Moulins is one of the department's historic towns and a good base for exploring the area.
  • The rural landscapes and forests suit unhurried days outdoors.

Allier suits travellers who want to combine a relaxed stay in spa surroundings with time in the countryside and small historic towns. Checking current opening times and transport links before setting out will help you make the most of a trip.
