Albina is a border town in the Marowijne District of Suriname, on the western bank of the Marowijne River. Across the water lies French Guiana, and the two sides are linked by a crossing that makes Albina one of the country's most important points of passage. It is also known as Albina Stad.

What to expect

Albina is first and foremost a place of movement. Travellers, traders and local residents pass through it on the way between Suriname and its eastern neighbour, so the town has the feel of a working crossing rather than a resort. Visitors who come for the border itself will find the river and the activity around it the centre of attention.

  • A riverside setting on the Marowijne, with French Guiana in view across the water
  • A key crossing point between Suriname and French Guiana
  • A quieter, less developed pace than the capital, Paramaribo

Planning a visit

Because Albina sits on an international frontier, it suits those who are interested in borders, river travel and the everyday life that grows up around them. Travellers crossing between the two territories should check the entry rules that apply at the time of their journey before setting out. The surrounding Marowijne District offers a wider sense of the country's eastern edge, and it makes a natural stop for anyone travelling overland through this part of South America.
