Ani is a heritage site in eastern Turkey, on the border with Armenia, and it is known as the medieval capital once called the "City of 1,001 Churches." Today its ruins stand on a plateau above a deep gorge, and the setting is a large part of what gives the place its haunting character.

What you can see

The site preserves the remains of churches, palaces and city walls. The surviving buildings show a mix of Armenian, Byzantine and Islamic architecture, so a walk through the ruins gives you a sense of how different traditions met and shaped one city. Much of the site is open ground, so it is worth allowing time to wander between the monuments rather than rushing from one to the next.

The setting

The plateau drops steeply toward the gorge, and the river and the border landscape beyond it give the visit an open, quiet feel. Many visitors come for the atmosphere as much as for the individual buildings, and the views are a good reason to linger.

Planning a visit

  • Ani suits travellers interested in medieval history, architecture and archaeology.
  • The ruins are spread across an open site, so comfortable footwear and some time to walk are useful.
  • Because the site lies near the Armenian border, it is worth checking current travel arrangements before you set out.

Ani is best approached as a slow, reflective visit, where the ruins themselves and the landscape around them tell the story of a city that once flourished here.
