阿拉瓦

Álava is the largest of the three Basque provinces in Spain, and the most varied. It sits in the interior of the Basque Country, a long way from the Cantabrian coast, and it rewards visitors who want to see the region's culture at a slower pace.

What to see

The provincial capital, Vitoria-Gasteiz, has a medieval old town that is the natural starting point for a visit. Its streets and squares give a clear sense of the city's long past, and the surrounding area is easy to explore on foot.

Beyond the capital, the province is known for its hilltop villages. These small settlements preserve centuries of history in their layout and buildings, and they make pleasant stops for anyone interested in the rural heritage of the region.

The wine country

Álava includes part of the renowned Rioja wine region. Rolling vineyards spread across sunny landscapes here, producing some of Spain's best-known wines. Visiting the vineyards, especially in the cooler months when the landscape changes with the seasons, is one of the most rewarding ways to spend time in the province.

Who it suits

  • Visitors who want an authentic taste of Basque culture away from the coastal crowds
  • Those interested in medieval towns and hilltop villages
  • Wine lovers exploring the Rioja landscape
  • Travellers who prefer a quieter, inland base for a trip through the Basque Country

Because the province is large and varied, it is worth planning a route in advance and choosing a few places to focus on rather than trying to see everything in a single visit.
