UNESCO世界遗产,建于6世纪Theodoric统治时期的洗礼堂,为Arian基督徒而建,拥有与Orthodox Baptistery相似的精美天花板马赛克。这是Arian宗教建筑的珍贵现存实例。

The Arian Baptistery stands on Via degli Ariani in Ravenna, in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy. Also known as the Baptistery of the Arians, it is one of the monuments that make up Ravenna's UNESCO World Heritage listing, and it is a fitting stop for anyone interested in early Christian architecture.

What you will see

The building dates from the 6th century, when Theodoric ruled Ravenna, and it was built for the city's Arian Christians. Its most striking feature is the set of ceiling mosaics, which are similar in style to those of the nearby Orthodox Baptistery. Standing beneath them gives a sense of how the two communities expressed their faith in closely related visual language, even as their beliefs differed.

The baptistery is a rare surviving example of Arian religious architecture, so it offers something you cannot easily see elsewhere. Visitors interested in the history of Christianity in late antique Italy will find it especially rewarding.

Making the most of your visit

  • Pair it with the Orthodox Baptistery, which shows comparable mosaics and makes an easy point of comparison.
  • Allow time to look up at the ceiling, where the mosaics reward slow looking.
  • Check the contact details before you travel, as opening arrangements are best confirmed directly: +39 0544 541688.

Ravenna itself is compact and easy to explore on foot, so the baptistery fits comfortably into a half-day or a longer stay focused on the city's mosaics and early Christian monuments.
