Basilika St. Johannes

Byzantinische Basilika, die über der vermuteten Grabstätte des Apostels Johannes errichtet wurde, erbaut von Kaiser Justinian im 6. Jahrhundert. Bietet Panoramablicke auf die Umgebung und die Burg Ayasuluk.

The Basilica of St. John stands on Ayasuluk Hill in Selçuk, a town in İzmir Province on Turkey's Aegean coast. It is a Byzantine basilica, built over the believed burial site of St. John the Apostle, and it was constructed under Emperor Justinian in the 6th century. Visitors also know it as Aziz Yuhanna Bazilikası, Saint John Basilica, or Ayasuluk Hill Basilica.

What the visit offers

  • A historic religious site: The basilica marks the place where St. John the Apostle is believed to have been buried, which gives the site its long significance for Christian pilgrims and history readers alike.
  • Views over the area: From the hill there are panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and of Ayasuluk Castle nearby.
  • A walk up the hill: The site suits a relaxed visit, combining the ruins with the open landscape around them.

Around the basilica

Selçuk is a small town, and the basilica is easy to pair with other stops in the area. Ayasuluk Castle is close by, and the views it shares with the basilica make the two a natural combination for a single outing. Because the town is compact, a visit can be woven into a longer day exploring the İzmir Province coast.

For current contact details, the basilica can be reached by telephone at +90 232 892 6010. The site is located on St. Jean Street, 35920 Selçuk, İzmir, Turkey.
