Gran Caverna de Santo Tomás, also known as the Great Cave of Santo Tomás or the Santo Tomás Cave, is an underground attraction in the Viñales region of Pinar del Río, in western Cuba. It lies within the protected Sierra de Quemados area, a landscape of limestone hills and farmland that gives the region its character.

The cave is the largest cave system in Cuba and one of the largest in Latin America. More than 46 km of its galleries have been mapped, which makes it a serious destination for anyone interested in caves, rock formations and the geology that shaped this part of the island.

What a visit offers

  • A chance to walk through extensive underground galleries rather than a short, single chamber.
  • Significant speleological features that reward a slow, attentive look.
  • A natural setting within a protected area, a good complement to the wider Viñales landscape.

Around the cave

Viñales is known for its tobacco fields, its dramatic limestone outcrops called mogotes, and its quiet rural roads. Visitors who make the trip to the cave can combine it with time in this countryside, where the pace is slow and the scenery changes quickly from valley to hill. Because the cave sits in a protected area, it is worth planning the day around the landscape as well as the galleries.

The cave is located on Carretera Palmarito in Minas de Matahambre, Pinar del Río. Those planning a visit can contact the site by telephone at +5348796144 to confirm arrangements before travelling.
