Región de la Araucanía

The Araucanía Region is a southern Chilean region in South America, known for its strong Mapuche indigenous culture, its temperate rainforests, its active volcanoes, and its lakes set in the foothills of the Andes. It is a destination for travellers who want landscape and culture in roughly equal measure.

What the region offers

  • Mapuche culture: The region is strongly shaped by the Mapuche people, and visitors can learn about their traditions, language and way of life.
  • Temperate rainforests: Green, damp forest covers much of the landscape and makes for quiet walks.
  • Active volcanoes: Volcanic peaks rise above the region and give it a dramatic outline.
  • Andean lakes: Lakes in the foothills of the Andes offer scenery for walks, pauses and photographs.

What kind of visit it makes

The Araucanía suits a slower trip built around nature and cultural encounters rather than a single sight. Days can move between forest paths, lakeside views and time spent learning about the Mapuche heritage that gives the region its character. Because the volcanoes and lakes are spread across the landscape, getting around by car is a common way to see more of it.

If you are planning a visit, consider the season and the weather, since the region is temperate and rainy in parts, and check local conditions before heading into the forest or up toward the volcanoes.
