Baltic Region

A region around the Baltic Sea including Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and parts of Scandinavia. Known for medieval old towns, coastal beauty, and rich maritime history.

The Baltic Region is an area of northern Europe that takes its name from the Baltic Sea, the shallow body of water that links the countries along its shores. It includes Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, along with parts of Scandinavia, and is also known as the Baltic States Region.

Visitors come for the medieval old towns that line parts of the coast and the interior, with their winding streets and historic centres. The region's coastline adds a different kind of appeal, with sea views and shorelines that change with the seasons. Its maritime history runs through many of its towns, which grew up around ports and trade routes on the sea.

What a visit offers

  • Walking through medieval old towns and their historic streets
  • Time on the coast and along the shores of the Baltic Sea
  • Learning about the maritime past that shaped the region's ports
  • Moving between countries, from the Baltic States to parts of Scandinavia

Because the region spans several countries, a trip can be planned around one stretch of coast or through a longer journey linking towns across borders. Each country has its own language, customs and character, so the variety is part of the experience.

Planning your trip

The region rewards unhurried travel. Allow time to stroll the old towns, to spend a day or more by the water, and to look into the maritime heritage that runs through the ports. Check the particular towns and sites you wish to see before you set out, as opening arrangements vary from place to place.
