The Great Pyramid of Giza stands in the Al Giza Desert on the outskirts of Giza, Egypt, within the wider Giza pyramid complex. It is also known as the Pyramid of Khufu or the Pyramid of Cheops, after the Fourth Dynasty pharaoh for whom it was built as a tomb.
What to expect
As the oldest and largest of the three pyramids at Giza, it is the principal monument of the site and the most immediate reason many visitors make the journey. It is one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and the only one of those wonders still largely intact, so a visit is as much about standing before a structure that has survived for millennia as it is about its history.
The setting is open desert, so a visit is best planned around the conditions outdoors. Comfortable footwear, water and sun protection are sensible for time spent on the site.
