Katla

📂 Attraction 🏷️ Volcano

Hidden beneath the massive Mýrdalsjökull glacier, Katla is one of Iceland's most powerful and historically active volcanoes. This sleeping giant has erupted roughly every 40-80 years, with its last major eruption in 1918 creating dramatic jökulhlaups (glacial floods). Visitors can explore ice caves in the glacier above or hike the dramatic black sand beaches formed by previous eruptions.
