To protect Marseille from the armies of Charles V, the king of France, Francis I built a fort in 1524, a maritime defense that the city lacked.

There is a vast difference between the basilica and the crypt. The basilica is quite a tall and ornate building, unlike the crypt, which is a shallow building with no decoration except for a few capitals.
