Phobjikha Valley is a glacial valley in central Bhutan, in Wangdue Phodrang District. It lies high in the Himalayan foothills, and its open, wide floor makes it feel very different from the forested slopes that surround it.
Why visitors come
The valley is best known as a winter habitat for the endangered black-necked crane. Each cold season these birds gather here, and visitors often plan their trip around them. Outside the winter months the valley is quieter, and the landscape and farming life become the main reasons to stay.
The valley is also known for its traditional farming practices. Fields and village life here follow long-established ways of working the land, and walking through the settlements gives a sense of rural Bhutan that is easy to appreciate at a slow pace.
