The Virunga are located in the center of the Albertine Rift. They extend over 7,800 km² between Uganda and Rwanda. The Virunga Massif is in the south and Mount Rwenzori in the north. Lake Edward, the Ishasha River, and the Rwindi Plains form the central sector. The southern sector is known for its montane rainforests, volcanoes, and mountain gorillas living on Mount Mikeno.
Imposing volcanoes such as Nyiragongo and Mikeno, with their smoking summits, surround the landscape, adding a touch of mystery. Explore the dense tropical forests, where centuries-old trees soar towards the sky and shelter unique plant species.
The Virunga are home to many important species. The elephant, hippopotamus, okapi, lion, and mountain gorilla are encountered in this region. A large number of birds have been recorded.
This area contains eleven species that are not found anywhere else in the world. That’s why it’s considered as the richest place for protecting reptiles among all Albertine Rifts reserves. Besides, Albertine rift has the largest number of amphibians which are unique to this region alone. In addition to these facts, three great apes live here: mountain gorillas, eastern lowland gorillas and eastern chimpanzees.
The park offers various activities for adventure enthusiasts. Go hiking on the steep trails, especially in the western part, where breathtaking views await. Explore the calm lakes, such as Lake Lutembe, by taking a dugout canoe. Discover the underwater plant life. Also observe the species of fish that live there. And if you are brave enough, try climbing Mount Nyiragongo - a memorable experience, as from its summit, you can get a better view of nature in action, with a molten lava lake in the heart of the crater.
