Bellver Castle is a circular Gothic castle in Spain, set on a hill above the city of Palma, on the island of Mallorca. Its round plan is unusual: it is one of the few round castles in Europe, and that shape gives it a distinctive silhouette when seen from the city below.

The castle dates from the 14th century. Its Gothic character shows in the stonework and the layout of its courtyard and towers, and the building is a clear example of how medieval military architecture could also be planned with care and balance.

What to expect on a visit

The main draw is the view. From the upper levels and walls, visitors look out over Palma Bay, with the sea, the harbour and the city spread below. It is a good place to understand how the castle was positioned: high enough to watch the approaches from the water and the land.

The castle also houses a museum of local history. It gives context to the island's past and to the building itself, so a visit can be as much about the stories of Mallorca as about the architecture.

Making the most of the trip

  • Allow time for both the exhibits and the walk around the walls and terraces.
  • Go on a clear day if you want the panoramic views of the bay at their best.
  • Combine the visit with time in Palma, which lies just below the hill and offers its own historic streets, harbour and cafés.

Bellver Castle suits visitors interested in medieval architecture, island history or simply a good outlook over the sea. Its round form and its setting above Palma Bay make it a memorable stop on a trip to the city.
