Catedral de Galway

Catedral de estilo renacentista terminada en 1965, uno de los edificios de piedra más grandes de Irlanda. Presenta hermosos rosetones y construcción de piedra caliza.

Galway Cathedral stands on University Road in Galway, on the western edge of Ireland's Connacht province. Its full name is the Cathedral of Our Lady Assumed into Heaven and St Nicholas, and it is often known simply as Galway Cathedral.

Completed in 1965, the building is in a Renaissance style and is one of the largest stone buildings in Ireland. Its construction is limestone, and the cut stone gives its walls a pale, solid presence. The rose windows are among the features visitors tend to remember, and the interior rewards a slow look at their colour and light.

What to expect

  • A large, mid-twentieth-century cathedral, distinct from Ireland's older Gothic churches
  • Limestone architecture with notable rose windows
  • A visit that suits a short stop or a longer, unhurried look around

Because the cathedral sits on University Road, it is a comfortable walk from the wider life of the city. Galway is known as a university town with a lively centre, so a visit can easily be paired with time spent exploring its streets, shops and waterfront.
