The Historic Centre of Bukhara is the old town of Bukhara in Uzbekistan's Bukhara Region, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is known in English also as the Bukhara Old City or Bukhara Historic Center, and it is a place to walk slowly rather than tick off from a list.

What you will see

The area holds the well-preserved medieval Islamic architecture of the old town. Its buildings include madrasas, mosques and traditional residential quarters, and the fabric of the city dates from roughly the 9th to the 16th centuries. Much of the pleasure lies in simply moving between these elements: a domed prayer hall, a courtyard of student cells, a row of houses set back from a narrow lane.

Planning your visit

  • Getting oriented: the Historic Centre is the heart of Bukhara, so the city's older quarters are the main reason to come.
  • Time on foot: the sites are close together and best explored on foot, with plenty of time to stop and look.
  • Contact: the site can be reached by telephone at +998 65 224 1050 if you want to check details before you travel.

Visitors who enjoy architecture, history or quiet urban wandering will find the centre rewarding. Those who prefer modern amenities may prefer to base themselves in the surrounding area and return to the old town during the day.
