Cueva Hoq

Hoq Cave lies on Socotra Island, part of Yemen and located in Asia. It is a limestone cave system that extends for miles underground, and visitors who explore it pass through a landscape of stalactites, stalagmites and other unusual rock formations.

What to expect underground

The cave's chambers are known for their pristine calcite formations, which give parts of the interior an otherworldly appearance. Underground pools also sit among the formations, having developed over a very long period. The setting is striking, and many visitors find the scale of the chambers as memorable as the individual shapes within them.

Why it suits a visit

  • Extensive underground passages to explore on foot
  • Calcite formations and rock shapes of unusual variety
  • Underground pools set within the chambers
  • A journey through one of the rock landscapes of the Arabian Peninsula region

Hoq Cave suits travellers with an interest in geology, natural landscapes and underground exploration. Because it is on Socotra, the cave is best approached as part of a wider trip to the island, where the surrounding terrain and scenery form a natural complement to the time spent below ground.
