Distrito de Brokopondo

Uno de los diez distritos de Suriname, ubicado en la parte central del país y conocido por el gran Embalse Brokopondo creado al represar el Río Suriname.

Brokopondo is one of the ten districts of Suriname, set in the central part of the country in South America. It is best known for the large Brokopondo Reservoir, a body of water created by damming the Suriname River. For visitors interested in the interior rather than the coastal towns, the district offers a change of scenery and a sense of how much of Suriname is shaped by its rivers.

What to expect

The reservoir is the defining feature of the district, and the landscape around it is the main reason to visit. Those who come here tend to be drawn by the water itself and by the quiet of the surrounding area, which contrasts with the bustle of the capital, Paramaribo.

Planning your visit

  • Brokopondo lies inland, so travel is usually a matter of leaving the coast and heading into the central part of the country.
  • Because the district is centred on a large reservoir rather than a dense urban core, plan your day around the water and the routes that reach it.
  • Pair a visit with time in Paramaribo, which offers the country's main museums, markets and places to stay before or after the journey inland.

Brokopondo suits travellers who want to see Suriname beyond the city, and who are happy with open views and a slower pace. Check local transport and conditions before you set out, as services in the interior can be more limited than on the coast.
