Edfu

Antigua ciudad egipcia a orillas del río Nilo, famosa por el bien conservado Templo de Horus, uno de los monumentos antiguos mejor preservados de Egipto.

Edfu is an ancient Egyptian city on the banks of the Nile, in the Aswan Governorate of southern Egypt. It is best known for its Temple of Horus, one of the best-preserved ancient monuments in the country, and for that reason it is a natural stop for anyone travelling the Nile between Luxor and Aswan.

The Temple of Horus

The temple is the centre of any visit. Its walls, columns and courtyards survive in remarkable condition, and the carved inscriptions give a clear sense of how the temple was used and decorated in antiquity. Visitors who enjoy architecture and ancient religion will find plenty to examine slowly, from the great entrance pylon to the inner sanctuaries. Allow enough time to walk the whole complex rather than simply passing through it.

What the visit is like

  • A focused, largely self-contained visit centred on one major monument.
  • A good fit for travellers who want an in-depth look at a single site rather than a long list of stops.
  • A place that pairs well with a wider exploration of the Nile valley and its other ancient sites.

Because Edfu sits on the river, it is also a pleasant place to see the Nile at a slower pace, with the rhythms of riverside life visible from the bank. Plan your day around the temple and let the rest of the town and the river shape the rest of your time.
