Ein Kerem is a historic neighborhood and former village on the western edge of Jerusalem, in the Jerusalem District of Israel. It sits in a valley of its own, a little removed from the bustle of the city centre, and many visitors come to it for a slower half-day rather than a rushed sightseeing stop.

What to see

  • Ancient churches, which give the neighborhood much of its character and are the reason many people visit.
  • Narrow stone streets, best explored on foot, where the old village layout is still easy to read.
  • Artists' studios and galleries, reflecting the artistic community that has settled in the area.

Why it is special

Ein Kerem is traditionally regarded as the birthplace of John the Baptist, a link that gives the place a distinctive religious significance. Its churches and quiet lanes make it feel different from the rest of Jerusalem, even though it is now part of the city.

Planning a visit

Ein Kerem suits anyone interested in religious heritage, old architecture or the work of local artists. Because the streets are narrow and hilly, comfortable shoes are a practical choice. Combining a visit with other parts of Jerusalem makes for an easy day out, since the neighborhood lies within the city itself.
