Fada N'Gourma is the largest city in eastern Burkina Faso and the capital of the Gourma province. It sits in a part of the country that many visitors pass through on the way to somewhere else, which makes it a useful place to stop and look around. Locals and travellers alike also call it simply Fada or Fada-Ngourma.
What to see and do
- Traditional architecture. The city is known for its traditional buildings, and walking through the older streets is one of the most rewarding ways to spend time here.
- Colourful markets. The markets are a lively part of daily life, full of local goods, colour and conversation. They are a good place to observe how the town works.
- Gourma culture. Fada is a centre of traditional Gourma culture, and visitors who take time to talk with residents often gain a clearer sense of the region's customs.
A base for the wild
Fada N'Gourma is also a practical base for exploring the region's wildlife areas. Its position in the east makes it a sensible starting point for those planning trips into the surrounding natural landscapes. Arrange transport and guides in advance, and check current conditions locally before setting out, as travel options in the area can change.
For a visitor, Fada suits a slower pace: a few days to wander the markets, admire the architecture, learn about Gourma life, and then head out to the wilder country beyond the town.
