The Gefion Fountain, also known in Danish as Gefionspringvandet, is one of the largest monuments in Copenhagen. It stands in Churchillparken, a green space on the city's eastern side, close to the waterfront of the Øresund strait.
The fountain shows the Norse goddess Gefion driving a team of four oxen. It is based on a legend about the creation of the island of Zealand, the island on which Copenhagen lies. Those who enjoy stories told through sculpture will find the scene a memorable one to look at closely, from the figures themselves to the water that surrounds them.
What to expect
- A large, dramatic fountain that is one of the city's major monuments
- A setting in Churchillparken, an open park suited to a relaxed walk
- A short distance from the harbour and the waterfront of Copenhagen's east side
Planning your visit
The fountain is an outdoor attraction, so it works well as a stop during a walk around the city rather than as a visit that needs much time indoors. Allow a while to see the sculpture from several angles and to sit in the park nearby. Its address is Churchillparken, 2100 København Ø, Denmark, which makes it easy to combine with other sights on the eastern side of the city.
