Fort Zeelandia stands at Fort Zeelandiastraat 1 in Paramaribo, the capital of Suriname. It is a heritage site from the 17th century, when the Dutch built a fort on this spot, and it is also known as Fort Nieuw-Amsterdam or Sterkte Nieuw-Amsterdam.
What you will find
Today the fort houses the Suriname Museum. Its displays show the country's colonial past and its cultural heritage, so a visit makes a useful introduction to the history of the country. The setting itself is part of the experience: the old fort walls and grounds are a reminder of the Dutch presence in the region three centuries ago.
