The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is a historic shopping gallery in Milan, Lombardy, opening onto Piazza del Duomo at the heart of the city. Locals also call it simply "the Gallery", and it is one of the first places many visitors head to after arriving at the cathedral square.
Its defining feature is its glass dome and the arcaded passage beneath it, which together make the space feel like an indoor street rather than an ordinary mall. Walking through it is as much part of the visit as stopping at any one shop.
What you will find inside
- Luxury boutiques lining the arcades, from fashion houses to jewellers and perfumers.
- Cafés where you can sit under the arches and watch the crowds pass by.
- Architecture worth looking up at, especially the glass dome overhead and the decorative ceilings and mosaic floors.
Planning your visit
The Gallery makes a natural stop on a walk around the centre, since it sits directly beside the Duomo. Allow time not only for browsing but for simply sitting with a coffee and taking in the setting. Because it is a busy public space, mornings or quieter parts of the day may give you more room to look up and take photographs.
For a fuller day in the area, the surrounding streets offer more shopping, cafés and restaurants, and the cathedral square is a short step away.
