Gedung Sate

Icónico edificio gubernamental Art Déco construido en 1920 durante el período colonial holandés, que ahora alberga el gobierno provincial de Java Occidental. Famoso por su distintiva aguja que se asemeja a pinchos de satay.

Gedung Sate is a government building in the centre of Bandung, the capital of West Java, Indonesia. It was built in 1920, during the Dutch colonial period, and is known for its Art Deco design. Today it houses the provincial government of West Java, so it remains a working office as well as a landmark. It is also called the Sate Building.

What to look for

The building is best known for its spire, which is said to resemble a row of satay skewers. Visitors often come to photograph the building from the street or the surrounding lawns, where the facade and the central tower are easy to see. The spire is the element most people recognise from pictures of the city.

Planning a visit

  • Address: Jl. Diponegoro No.22, Citarum, Bandung Wetan, Bandung City, West Java 40115, Indonesia
  • Phone: +62 22 4264001
  • Type of visit: a short stop for architecture and photography, best combined with a walk around the central part of the city

Because the building functions as an active government seat, it is wise to check with the contact number before going, especially if you hope to go inside. Visiting the outside takes far less planning.

Around the building

Gedung Sate sits in a part of Bandung where colonial-era architecture and everyday city life sit side by side. It makes a natural starting point for exploring the neighbourhood on foot, and it pairs well with other sights in the city centre. For a visitor interested in the history of Bandung and its architecture, it offers a clear and rewarding stop.
