Guainía is a remote department in the Amazon region of Colombia, in the far east of the country, on South America's northern side. It is a destination for travellers who want wilderness rather than conveniences, with the Orinoco river system shaping the landscape and the rhythm of life.

The river and its wildlife

The waters of the Orinoco system are the department's main draw. Pink river dolphins are among the animals visitors hope to see here, moving through the river's clear and quiet stretches. Boat trips on the water are the natural way to watch for them and to take in the forest edges as they pass.

Landscape and communities

Much of Guainía is rainforest that remains largely undisturbed, and the sense of space is part of the experience. The region is also home to several indigenous communities who keep traditional ways of life. Visitors who come with respect for local customs and for the people who live here will find that the cultural side of the trip is as important as the natural one.

One of the notable features is the Cerros de Mavecure, ancient rock formations that rise sharply from the surrounding flat forest. They make a striking point to head for, and their presence gives the landscape a distinctive shape that stays in the memory.

Planning a visit

  • Guainía suits travellers who enjoy slow, remote journeys and are comfortable with limited infrastructure.
  • Time on the water, whether for dolphin watching or for reaching rock formations, is the core of most trips.
  • Visitors should keep in mind the department's remoteness and plan their travel and supplies ahead of arrival.

For anyone drawn to the Amazon at its quieter end, Guainía offers a chance to see a river landscape, its wildlife and its communities up close, at a pace set by the water.
