The Great Market Hall, known in Hungarian as Nagycsarnok or Központi Vásárcsarnok, sits on Vámház körút in Budapest, close to the Danube and the Liberty Bridge area. It is the largest and oldest indoor market in the city, and it remains one of the most recognisable places in the Hungarian capital to shop, eat and look around.
What you will find inside
The hall is a lively place to see how locals buy their food. Stalls offer traditional Hungarian produce, and the range of items makes it easy to find something to take home or to try on the spot. Alongside the food, there are crafts and souvenirs, so the market works as well for a browse as for a purchase.
- Traditional Hungarian foods, from fresh produce to regional specialities
- Handmade crafts and souvenirs
- A busy, everyday atmosphere that shows the city at work
The building
The architecture is a large part of the visit. The hall has a neo-Gothic character, and its roof and details are decorated with colourful Zsolnay tiles, a Hungarian ceramic tradition that gives the interior a distinctive look. Take a moment to look up as well as at the stalls.
Planning your visit
The market is an easy addition to a walk through central Budapest. Its position near the river means it pairs well with a stroll along the Danube embankment or a visit to the nearby streets and shops.
