Monasterio de Gangtey

El único monasterio Nyingmapa en el oeste de Bhután, situado en el hermoso valle de Phobjikha. Importante hábitat de invierno para las grullas de cuello negro.

Gangtey Monastery sits in the Phobjikha Valley, in Wangdue Phodrang District of western Bhutan. It is also known as Gangtey Gonpa or Gangteng Monastery. The monastery is the only Nyingmapa monastery in western Bhutan, which gives it a distinct place among the country's religious sites.

The setting is a large part of the visit. The monastery overlooks the broad, open Phobjikha Valley, and the surrounding landscape is a quiet, green expanse that draws many travellers who come for the scenery as much as the buildings.

What the valley offers

The valley is an important winter habitat for black-necked cranes. Visitors who come in the colder months may have the chance to see these birds in the wetlands and fields below the monastery. Because the valley is known for this, many people plan their trip around the cranes' seasonal presence rather than the monastery alone.

Planning a visit

  • Gangtey Monastery is in Phobjikha Valley, Wangdue Phodrang, Bhutan.
  • It suits visitors interested in Buddhist monasteries, rural landscapes and birdwatching.
  • For current contact details, the monastery can be reached by telephone at +975-2-584333.

A stop here works well as a slower, unhurried part of a journey through western Bhutan. Allow time to walk around the valley and simply take in the open views, which are the setting that gives the monastery its character.
