Haghpat Monastery stands in Lori Province in northern Armenia, in the village of Haghpat. It is a medieval monastic complex, also known as Haghpatavank or the Monastery of Haghpat, and it is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its place in the history of Armenian religious building.

What you will see

The complex was built between the 10th and 13th centuries and is often cited as the highest flowering of Armenian religious architecture. Visitors walk among churches, chapels and related structures set within the monastery grounds, where the stonework and the arrangement of the buildings give a clear picture of how the community lived and worshipped.

Planning a visit

  • Location: Haghpat, Lori Province, Armenia.
  • Kind of visit: a historic site suited to a half-day or a stop along a longer route through the north of the country.
  • Contact: +374-253-33421.

Because the site is remote from larger urban centres, it suits travellers who are already exploring the Lori region and want a focused look at medieval architecture. The surrounding landscape of the province adds to the sense of an excursion away from the busier parts of the country.

Haghpat appeals most to visitors with an interest in architecture, religious history and heritage sites. Those who enjoy quiet, unhurried exploration will find it a rewarding destination.
