Gegharkunik is a province in eastern Armenia, in Asia, and it takes much of its character from Lake Sevan. The lake is the largest in Armenia, and it is often called the "Jewel of Armenia." Its clear water and wide open shoreline make the province a natural choice for anyone who enjoys the outdoors.
What to see
- Lake Sevan, the centrepiece of the province, with its broad views across the water.
- Sevanavank Monastery, set on a peninsula above the lake, a place to stop for its setting and its view over the water.
- The mountain scenery that surrounds the lake, which gives every stretch of the shore a different outlook.
Why visit
Gegharkunik suits a slower kind of trip. Much of a visit is spent simply by the water, walking the shoreline, taking in the mountains, and watching the light change over the lake. It is a good base for travellers who want nature first and a few historic sites along the way.
Food is one of the pleasures here. The province is known for its fresh fish dishes, which are best enjoyed by the lake itself, with the scenery in view.
Planning your trip
Because the province is spread around a large lake and its surrounding hills, it rewards a visitor who plans a route in advance and allows time to move between the lakeside and the monastery. Those who want to explore further can use the lake as a starting point for the wider countryside of eastern Armenia.
