Región del Extremo Norte

Región administrativa más septentrional de Camerún, caracterizada por el paisaje de sabana del Sahel y que sirve como puerta de entrada a Chad y la República Centroafricana.

The Far North Region is the northernmost administrative region of Cameroon, in Central Africa. Its landscape is Sahel savanna, a wide, dry grassland that opens under a large sky and changes character with the seasons. For visitors, the region is as much a place of distance and open horizons as it is a destination in its own right.

The landscape

The Sahel savanna that defines the region is a transitional belt between the Sahara to the north and the wetter forests and grasslands to the south. Travellers tend to notice the broad, open country, the scattered trees, and the way the land feels expansive compared with the south of Cameroon. The savanna suits slow travel: long drives, quiet roads, and views that stretch for a long way.

A gateway region

The Far North serves as a gateway to Chad and the Central African Republic, which gives the region a sense of crossroads. Anyone planning to travel onward from Cameroon into these neighbouring countries will find it lies along that route. Because of this position, the region is often passed through as well as visited in its own right.

Planning a visit

  • Plan for long distances, since the region is large and the savanna is open country.
  • Check current travel conditions and advice before you go, as they can change.
  • Think of the region as a place to combine with other parts of Cameroon, or with onward travel north and east.

If you enjoy wide landscapes, unhurried journeys, and the feeling of standing at the edge of a larger region, the Far North Region offers a distinctive visit within Cameroon.
