Templo Gunung Kawi

Complejo de templos antiguos con santuarios excavados en la roca tallados en acantilados. Data del siglo XI y cuenta con tumbas reales y hermosos alrededores de terrazas de arroz.

Gunung Kawi Temple, also known as Pura Gunung Kawi, is an ancient temple complex in Tampaksiring, Gianyar Regency, on the island of Bali in Indonesia. It is a place where history is visible in the stone itself: its shrines are carved directly into cliff faces rather than built up from separate blocks.

What you will see

The complex dates from the 11th century and includes royal tombs cut into the rock. Walking among them gives a sense of how the carvings sit against the cliff, with the stone shaped into shrine-like forms. The setting is quiet and rooted in its landscape, which is a large part of the visit.

The surroundings

  • The temple is set among rice terraces, so the green fields form the backdrop to the carved stone.
  • Tampaksiring is a small town in the Gianyar area, a short distance from the rest of central Bali.
  • Allow time to take in the views of the terraces and the cliffs as well as the shrines themselves.

Is it worth the trip?

If you are interested in ancient architecture or in Bali beyond its beaches, Gunung Kawi is a rewarding stop. It suits a slow, unhurried visit. For practical details, the temple can be reached at +62 361 978234, and its address is Tampaksiring, Gianyar Regency, Bali 80552, Indonesia.
