Templo Haeinsa

Haeinsa Temple sits in the mountains of Hapcheon, South Korea, within Gayasan National Park. It is a Buddhist temple, and it is best known as the home of the Tripitaka Koreana, a complete collection of Buddhist scriptures carved onto more than 80,000 wooden blocks. The blocks are listed by UNESCO, and the temple has kept them for nearly 800 years.

What you will see

  • The woodblocks. The carved blocks are the reason most visitors come. Their sheer number, and the fact that they survive intact, make them one of the most remarkable collections of its kind.
  • The temple grounds. Haeinsa is a working sacred site, so the atmosphere is quiet and reflective. Walking through the buildings gives a sense of its long life as a place of worship.
  • The surrounding park. The temple lies inside Gayasan National Park, so the hillsides and forest paths are close at hand.

Planning your visit

Haeinsa suits visitors interested in religious history, manuscript preservation, or simply a calm day away from the city. Because the temple is a place of practice as well as a museum-like attraction, it is worth behaving with the same care you would show at any active shrine. Check the temple's current arrangements before you travel, as access and viewing details can change.

Hapcheon is a rural county, so the temple works best as a dedicated trip rather than a quick stop. Plan time to take in both the scriptures and the mountain setting around them.
