Gedong Songo Temples (also written Candi Gedong Songo) is a group of Hindu temples in Central Java, Indonesia, set on the slopes of Mount Ungaran in Semarang Regency. The complex is in the village of Candi in Bandungan, a short way from the city of Semarang.
The site holds eight temples dating from the 8th century. The name means "nine buildings", though only eight are counted today. Built in stone on the hillside, the temples are spread across the slope rather than gathered in one courtyard, so a visit involves walking between them and taking in the surroundings as you go.
What a visit offers
- Old stone temples on a mountain slope, reached on foot between separate sites
- Views over the mountain landscape, which give the walk much of its character
- Hot springs in the complex, a restful end to a day of walking
Planning the trip
The temples suit visitors interested in early Hindu architecture and in landscapes of volcanic hills. Because the sites are spread out and set on a slope, comfortable walking shoes are a sensible choice. For current details on getting there and visiting, you can call the site at +62 24 6921867.
Bandungan, the village around the temples, is a useful base for exploring the wider area of Semarang Regency, and the temples make a natural half-day or full-day outing from the city.
