Bukoba is a town in north-western Tanzania, set on the shores of Lake Victoria. It is the main town of the Kagera region, and visitors come to it for a slower pace by the water, green surroundings and a chance to see a part of the country that many travellers pass by.
Lakeside and landscape
The town sits on the lake, and its setting is defined by it. Lake Victoria is Africa's largest lake, and the shoreline here makes a natural place to spend an evening, with sunsets over the water being one of the reasons people linger. Around the town, the land rises into rolling hills and is lush and green, so walks and drives out of town tend to take in wide views of the countryside.
Coffee and the Haya heritage
Bukoba is known for its coffee culture, and the surrounding farms are part of what gives the area its character. The town is also the heart of the Haya people's ancient kingdom, so a visit offers a sense of a long local history rooted in this particular place.
Planning a visit
- Plan for the lakeside: time by the water is the simplest pleasure here.
- Allow time for the countryside beyond the town, where the hills and coffee farms are.
- Think of Bukoba as a base for a quieter stretch of Tanzania, away from the larger tourist circuits.
