Citadelle de Namur

Forteresse historique dominant le confluent des rivières Meuse et Sambre. L'une des plus grandes forteresses d'Europe avec des galeries souterraines et des musées.

The Citadel of Namur, known in French as the Citadelle de Namur, is a historic fortress on a hill in Namur, the capital city of Wallonia in Belgium. It stands above the point where the Meuse and Sambre rivers meet, and the views over the water and the city below are one of the first things visitors remark on.

What to expect

The site is one of Europe's largest fortresses, and it is large enough that a visit usually feels more like an outing than a quick stop. Its interest lies in its scale and its layers: above ground, the fortifications and their setting; below ground, a network of underground galleries; and, within the grounds, museums that help place the site in context.

  • Historic fortifications set on a commanding hilltop
  • Underground galleries running beneath the site
  • Museums within the citadel
  • Panoramic views over the Meuse and Sambre confluence

Getting there and planning

The citadel is at Route Merveilleuse 64, 5000 Namur. Visitors wanting to confirm details before going can call +32 81 65 45 00. Because the site is extensive, it is sensible to allow a good part of a day, particularly if you plan to explore the galleries and museums as well as walk the grounds.

The wider city

Namur itself is a pleasant base for the visit. After exploring the fortress, you can walk down into the city, where the riverside and the old streets offer a relaxed contrast to the walls and tunnels above. The citadel suits visitors interested in military history, fortification architecture, and wide views, and it works equally well for a family outing or an independent walk.
