Colonia del Sacramento is a historic colonial city on the Uruguayan side of the Río de la Plata, in the department of Colonia. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and many visitors come for the sense of walking through an old town whose streets and buildings have been kept largely intact.
What to see
- Cobblestone streets that wind through the historic quarter, best explored on foot at an unhurried pace.
- The lighthouse, one of the city's best-known landmarks, visible from much of the old town.
- Portuguese architecture, a reminder of the city's colonial past and its layered heritage.
The visit
The old quarter is compact, so it suits a relaxed half-day or a longer stroll with stops along the way. Because the historic centre is small and walkable, it is easy to combine sightseeing with time sitting outdoors and watching the river. The city is also commonly known simply as Colonia or Sacramento, so you may see either name on signs and maps.
Colonia is a convenient place to spend time if you are interested in Uruguay's colonial history and architecture. If you enjoy quiet walks through old streets and views over the water, it makes a rewarding destination.
