The Deichtorhallen in Hamburg is a contemporary art museum set in two historic market halls at Deichtorstraße 1-2, close to the city centre. Known in English as the Deichtor Halls, it is one of Europe's largest exhibition spaces for contemporary art, and its rotating shows make it a place to return to rather than a single visit to tick off.
What you can see
The halls host changing exhibitions across several fields:
- Modern art, shown across large, flexible galleries
- Photography, with programmes that change from one season to the next
- Design, presented alongside the art and photography
Because the programme rotates, what you find on one visit may differ entirely from the next, so it is worth checking what is currently on before you go.
The building
The two halls are historic market buildings, and their scale suits the big installations and expansive shows the museum is known for. Walking between the rooms gives a sense of the original structures as well as the artworks they now hold.
Planning your visit
The museum is easy to reach on foot or by public transport from the centre of Hamburg, and the surrounding harbour and old town area offers plenty to explore before or after your time inside. For opening hours, ticket prices and the current programme, contact the museum directly on +49 40 321030.
