DMZ

The Korean Demilitarized Zone, usually called the DMZ, is a strip of land running across the Korean Peninsula that separates South Korea from North Korea. It is one of the last Cold War frontiers in the world, and for many visitors it is the most striking place they will see in the country.

What a visit offers

  • Observation posts from which you can look across into North Korea.
  • Underground infiltration tunnels, dug beneath the zone, that you can walk through.
  • A wildlife sanctuary, since the heavily fortified buffer zone, about 2.5 miles wide, has become a refuge for plants and animals.

The mood of the place is unusual. Military tension and quiet natural beauty sit side by side, and many visitors find the contrast memorable. The landscape feels both watched and wild.

Going on a tour

Access to the zone is organised through guided tours, which provide the context and the route for the visit. Because the area is a military frontier, you should expect rules and checks rather than free wandering. Plan your day around the tour rather than trying to reach the site on your own.

If you are interested in modern history, the Cold War, or simply a landscape that is hard to find anywhere else, the DMZ makes a serious and thoughtful day out from South Korea.
