Écija is a town in Andalusia, in southern Spain, set along the Genil River. It is known as the "City of Towers" because of its notable group of Baroque church spires, which rise above the historic centre and give the town its skyline.

What to see

The historic centre is the main reason to visit. Its 18th-century palaces stand out for their distinctive tile work and ornate facades, and together they form a striking architectural ensemble. Wandering the streets on foot allows you to take in these façades at close range and to notice how the towers appear and disappear between the buildings.

What kind of visit it makes

  • A half-day or day trip for walking through the old town and admiring its palaces and church towers.
  • A quieter stop for travellers who prefer smaller Andalusian towns to larger cities.
  • A chance to see Baroque architecture in a setting that is less crowded than some of the region's better-known sites.

Practical note

Écija has a reputation for being one of the hottest places in Spain during summer. Travellers planning a visit in the warmer months should consider going in the cooler parts of the day and carrying water.
