Église du Saint-Esprit

Helligåndskirken, the Church of the Holy Spirit, is one of the oldest churches in Copenhagen, dating back to the 15th century. It stands in the heart of the city, close to Strøget, the long pedestrian street that runs through the centre, so it is an easy stop between shopping, cafés and sightseeing.

What to expect

The church is a medieval building, and its architecture is the main reason to visit. Stepping inside gives a sense of how long this place has been part of the city's life, while the surrounding streets remain busy and modern.

The courtyard market

The church also hosts a regular market in its courtyard. If your visit coincides with it, you can browse what is on offer and enjoy the setting, where the old stone of the church meets the everyday activity of the city.

Helligåndskirken suits visitors who want a short, calm break from the city centre. It pairs well with a walk along Strøget and the streets around it, and it works equally well as a quiet stop on a longer day of exploring Copenhagen.
