Europe de l'Est

Une région diversifiée comprenant la Pologne, la République tchèque, la Hongrie, la Roumanie et des parties de l'ancienne Union soviétique. Riche en architecture médiévale et émergeant comme destinations touristiques populaires.

Eastern Europe is a region of Europe rather than a single place, and a visit here is best planned around the countries and cities that make it up. The facts available describe it as a diverse region that takes in Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Romania, along with parts of the former Soviet Union. It is also sometimes called East Europe.

What the region offers

The region is rich in medieval architecture, and that is one of its clearest draws for visitors. Old town centres, churches, castles and fortified streets appear across the countries named above, so a traveller can build a route that moves from one historic setting to the next. Because the region spans several countries, each stop can feel different from the last, shaped by its own history and character.

In recent years the area has become more popular with tourists. Those who arrive with an interest in architecture, history and slower city walks will find plenty to occupy them.

Planning a trip

  • Choose a focus. Because the region is wide, a route through one or two countries often makes a more rewarding trip than trying to cover all of them.
  • Look at the medieval towns. Old quarters and their architecture are the region's most consistent attraction.
  • Check each country separately. Travel arrangements, currencies and entry details vary from one nation to the next, so confirm them for each leg of your journey.

Eastern Europe suits travellers who like to move between countries and see how each one holds its past. Treat it as a set of destinations linked by geography, and plan accordingly.
