Geumjeong Fortress, also known as Geumjeongsanseong, sits on the ridgeline of Geumjeongsan Mountain in Geumjeong-gu, a district of Busan, South Korea. It is one of the largest mountain fortresses in Korea, and its stone walls run for more than 18 km along the crest of the range.

What you will see

The fortress was built during the Joseon Dynasty as a defence against Japanese invasions. Walking its walls gives a sense of how the structure followed the mountain's shape, rising and falling with the ridge rather than cutting straight across it. Because the walls are long, most visitors choose a section to explore rather than attempting the full circuit in one outing.

Planning a visit

The fortress suits visitors who enjoy:

  • Walking on historic stonework with wide views over the surrounding hills
  • Heritage sites that are set within a natural landscape
  • A slower pace, away from the busier streets of central Busan

Since the site is a mountain ridge, comfortable shoes and attention to the weather are sensible. Check local information for access routes and current conditions before you set out.

The wider area

Geumjeong Fortress is in Busan, a port city on the southeast coast of Korea. Pairing a walk on the walls with time in the city's neighbourhoods and coastline makes for a full day, with the mountain offering a contrast to the urban and seaside parts of the visit.
