The Giardini di Augusto, also known as the Gardens of Augustus, are a terraced botanical garden on the southern edge of Capri town, on the island off the Bay of Naples in Italy. They are reached from the town along Via Matteotti, and they make a gentle, scenic stop for anyone spending time in the centre of the island.
What to expect
The gardens are laid out on a series of terraces, so a visit is partly a walk up and down through different levels. The paths are filled with colourful flowers and Mediterranean plants, which give the place a bright, fragrant character through much of the year.
The main reason many visitors come is the view. From the terraces you look out over the Faraglioni rocks, the famous sea stacks that rise from the water off Capri, and down onto the Via Krupp, the switchback road cut into the cliffs below. Seeing the road wind across the rock face is one of the more striking sights of the island.
Why visit
- A relaxed garden setting in the middle of a busy island
- Panoramic views over the Faraglioni rocks
- A clear look at the Via Krupp road carved into the cliffs
- Easy to combine with a walk through Capri town
The gardens suit a short visit as well as a longer stay. Allow time to walk the terraces slowly, stop at the viewpoints, and enjoy the plants before continuing into the town or down towards the coast.
